First Grade Artwork

       Warm and Cool Color Weaving

In this lesson, first grade students learned about the warm and cool colors. After learning various painting techniques, the students created their own colorful paper with liquid watercolors.  The warm and cool colored paper the students had created was then cut into strips and used to weave into some very beautiful blankets. Enjoy!

Action Lines

In this lesson, First and Second grade students learned about different types of lines. Through class discussion, we first compiled a list of the different types of lines: Straight, Wavy, ZigZag, Curly, Dotted, and Curved. We then used kinesthetic movement to create these different types of lines with our bodies. For the project itself, students learned how to create the different types of lines with colored construction paper through utilizing different folding, wrapping, cutting, and gluing techniques. Through utilizing these techniques, each student crafted a three-dimensional action line collage which presents the artistic element of line, and the artistic principle of movement.

Notan

Art of Notan originates back to ancient Japan. This artistic practice represents the balance between light and dark which is shown through reflective symmetry.  In this lesson, first grade students learned about the differences between geometric and organic shapes. Students cut unique organic and geometric shapes from the sides of their black 6”X6” black square. In the effort to create their own Notan, students then flipped these shapes to represent reflective symmetry, and the contrast between both light and dark.

Primary Color Cup Printing

In this lesson students learned about the three Primary Colors: Red, Yellow, and Blue. Using cups, students printed six yellow circles, seven red circles, and eight blue circles. On week one, students printed on black paper, on week two students were able to reflect off prior knowlege and complete the same lesson a second time on white paper. When shown togeather the principle of art, Contrast,  can be seen.
